CORONA(COVID-19) –A blessing in disguise?

corona

The vast majority of us are being subjected to a global crisis, which is beyond imagination for the first time in our lives. Under the present circumstances, there are only two main options:

Option 1

Worry, fret, mull and mope over the present scenario and be unhappy about the plans for the immediate future, which have been shattered overnight.

Option 2

When the times were turbulent and unfavorable, my grandmother used to say, ”Every cloud has a silver lining” meaning there is always something good or positive in every situation in life.

Two men looked out through the prison bars. One saw the mud and other saw the stars”-Dale Carnegie. Your perception makes all the difference.

Therefore, instead of “cursing the darkness, we need to light a candle”.

The choice is entirely yours.

Most of us are locked-down in our own homes with little or no interaction with the external world. Hence, this is the most opportune time to develop your inner resources and self. Only ten percent of the things “happen” to us (which are beyond our control). The balance ninety percent depends on how you respond to the situations (external stimuli).

Here are a few things that you could focus on. Please note that the list is not exhaustive.

  1. Realize and understand the true nature of life and how uncertain the future can be.
  2. Create an emergency fund for yourself and your family.
  3. Pay attention to your health both mental and physical.
  4. Reflect on your life up to now. Identify your strengths and find ways to develop or maintain them. Take stock of your weaknesses and analyze ways to overcome them.
  5. Start a new exercise routine for the mind and body both.
  6. Spend time with your family.
  7. Plan your immediate future based on your own priorities in life. Document it.
  8. Plan out how you can save time effort and money in your daily endeavors. eg: prepare a grocery list and classify items under bi-weekly, weekly and monthly purchases. Find the closest supermarkets on your way to daily work.
  9. Hone your skills for better performance, when the times are good.
  10. Learn new useful skills.
  11. Read on a variety of topics.
  12. Set a side a few minutes each day to listen/watch news and to be updated on the global and local scenario.
  13. Talk to long lost friends.
  14. Talk to vulnerable people like older folks, young children and those living alone and see if you could help them in terms of providing food and medication.
  15. Build a database or a list of friends and contact persons.
  16. Declutter your home. Separate things to keep from things to be sold and things to be given on charity.
  17. Listen to soothing music.
  18. Indulge in your hobbies and passions.
  19. Enjoy nature – rain , wind, sunshine and teach your kids to do the same.
  20. Start a side hustle to generate additional income.

A story to inspire you.

Once upon a time there were three queens who lived in India. They were the very proud money queen, the humble service queen and the intelligent knowledge queen. These three queens were known to grant wishes to the people if they can touch these queens. So one could select the money queen and run behind her and catch her to get money. Similarly one could go behind the knowledge queen or the service queen to either to get more knowledge or provide more service to others.

The money queen as you know was the proudest of them all. When one starts running behind her, she starts eluding you and runs faster and faster. So the person running behind her gets so tired and slows down. At this point the money queen too relaxes and gives the illusion that you can go and catch her. So the person starts running again. Lo and behold the money queen starts running faster and it becomes virtually impossible to catch her.

However if one starts running behind the knowledge queen or the service queen, the very proud money queen starts getting jealous. After she realizes that the person is running after the service or the knowledge queen, and is not running behind her, the Money queen starts running behind these people and starts giving the money.

Morale of the story, always increase your knowledge and start asking the question, how may I be of service rather than what I can get out of this (money) .

In a nutshell, use this time to enhance your knowledge and enrich the services you provide to self and others, Money will follow you like your own shadow.
